What Is ADHD?
ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects a child’s ability to focus, control impulses, and regulate their energy levels. While every child may occasionally struggle with attention or hyperactivity, children with ADHD experience these challenges more frequently and intensely, often impacting their daily lives. ADHD is typically categorized into three types: inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, and combined. Children with inattentive ADHD may have difficulty staying focused, following instructions, or completing tasks. Those with hyperactive-impulsive ADHD may struggle with sitting still, waiting their turn, or controlling impulses. Many children exhibit a combination of these traits, which is referred to as combined ADHD.
Recognizing the Signs of ADHD
ADHD can present differently in every child, but there are some common signs parents can look for. Children with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, frequently lose items, or seem forgetful in daily activities. They may also exhibit hyperactive behaviors, such as fidgeting, running or climbing in inappropriate situations, or talking excessively. Impulsivity is another hallmark of ADHD, which can include interrupting others, difficulty waiting their turn, or acting without thinking. If you notice these behaviors in your child and they are affecting their ability to succeed at home or in school, it is important to discuss your concerns with a pediatrician. At Children’s Medical Group, we take the time to listen to your observations and work with you to determine the best course of action.
